Who is Captain?
Captain is a 160 pound Newfoundland dog who has been specially trained as a therapy dog and also certified as a Reading Education Assistance Dog (R.E.A.D.). Once a week, he visits a public elementary school in Washington, DC, where students in grades 2-4 take turns reading aloud to Captain.
How do you become a therapy dog?
As a first step, Captain had to pass a test administered by the American Kennel Club (A.K.C.) called the Canine Good Citizen test. This purpose of this test was to make sure that Captain was obedient and had a good temperament for being around people. Next, Captain and Lucy (his handler) went through a 6 week therapy dog training course administered by National Capital Therapy Dogs, Inc. that culminated in a test of Captain’s obedience and ability to interact with strangers in a variety of different situations. Finally, Captain became a R.E.A.D. dog, a certification program administered by Intermountain Therapy Animals based in Salt Lake City, UT.
How do dogs help children read?
Reading therapy dogs improve children’s reading ability by encouraging them to read aloud. Dogs create a safe, fun, and non-judgmental environment for reading. As a result, children gain confidence and improve their reading skills.
What are the Captain books?
The Captain books are fun stories about Captain. They are written at a beginning reading level and are used at home and in schools to encourage children to read aloud.
